It’s late at night (but in the midnight sun it doesn’t matter) we are at the Storfossen campground by the Tana river. The Tana is by the way to one of the best Atlantic Salomon rivers in the world. We have just bumped in to group of friends who also have been roaming in the same area hunting salmon, trout and the mysterious arctic char (always nice to bump into god old friends when out fishing).
Earlier the same evening the the final in he European football championship was played (you know real football, the stuff people in the US and A for some strange reason call socker), this night the world was fair and Germany lost (congratulations Carlos!)… I dunno if that was why the German guy sitting in front of my friend’s cabin was so drunk. And unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the “Storfossen oldtimer”, but I do remember his good advice on catching the monsters of Storfossen (in not to bad Norwegian):
“… alle kan få laks, spiller ingen rolle hvilken flua. Men den flua må være i vannet… den flua må være i vannet…” (which in my bad English translate into something like: “… anyone can catch a salmon, the fly pattern you fish doesn’t matter. The fly have to be in the water… The fly have to be in the water”)
The latter point was repeated so many times that all of us will remember it for the rest of our life… There is a Norwegian saying: “The truth is spoken by drunk people and kids.” And sometimes thats just so true (since I have two children I don’t have to start drinking for the benefit).
I also think the “fly in the water rule” holds for many of the important things in life. If your fly is not in the water you will not catch anything. If “your fly” is not in the water you’ll not get the job of your dreams, not get the girl/man of your dreams, not get new friends and certainly not catch the fish of your dreams. So open up, give the lucky star a chance and go put “your fly in the water”.
